Moles

If you think moles are cute, think again. Most gardeners will agree that you need to get rid of them before they get rid of your favorite plants and flowers. While they are insectivores and will not eat your plants, the tunnels they burrow in their search for insects, earthworms, and larvae can become a problem. They turn the grass brown, create low and weak spots in your yard, and the tunnels which resemble labyrinths of sorts can become home to other animals.

According to Planet Natural, there are six species in North America with the Eastern Mole considered to the most common yard and garden pest. They are big eaters, and in their quest for food, they push up mounds of earth that wreak havoc to your neatly designed landscape and harm the root system of growing plants. Their tunnels also create the perfect runways for rodents like voles to quickly get to your prized flower bulbs or root crops. Not to mention, there are natural predators like coyotes and foxes that wait for them to make an appearance.

How Do You Identify If You Have A Problem?

For starters, check your lawn and soil for tunnels. If you notice soil piles and raised trails in the form of volcano-shaped ridges that sometimes resemble little hills and at other times are much larger, then you’ve got a mole problem on your hands or rather in your yard. It is a nuisance to be continuously pushing down piles of mud and rather costly to incessantly be reseeding the plots laid bare by these tunneling marauders.

Moles seldom come up to the surface and rarely come into contact with people. That said, threatening any wild animal is not recommended. They also pose as a health hazard since they carry fleas and ticks that can be easily transmitted to humans and pets. Those parasites spread diseases like Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, Lyme Disease etc. The family dog is put at further risk in their attempt to catch a mole. They have very sharp claws and your unsuspecting family friend subjects his snout to attack when digging at a hole.

Why You Need to Call In The Experts

Do-it-yourself control can prove to be futile as there are generally less than 3 moles per acre. The average homeowner lacks the knowledge and expertise to cover such a large area in search of a creature that weighs less than half a pound. Using store bought baits can also be dangerous for pets. Typically, eradication requires monitoring and follow up service.
