Somis, California

Somis, CA

Although Somis, California, remains unincorporated to this day, it has been inhabited for centuries. There is still evidence from long ago, with Native American jewelry, art, and clothing still found today. The community was officially established as part of Ventura County in 1892. That came after a Mexican land grant from part of the Las Posas Valley. Although the unincorporated community may only have about 3,000 residents, it still has plenty that makes the area unique.

Somis sits west of Arroyo Las Posas, on the south bank of Fox Barranca. Its current name comes from Chumash Native Americans. Somis translates to "water of the scrub oak," a label suspected to have emerged in honor of a Rancheria. Corn, wheat, and barley were popular crops that remained that way until the 19th century.

Those crops and that cultural history play a major influence over the food that's most sought-after in Somis today. A local favorite place to eat is the Somis Café and Market, a Mexican restaurant popular for its breakfast burritos, enchiladas, and daily specials on authentic food like pozole, albondigas, and chile verde.

If you'd prefer a quick place to grab some food, the Don Taco food truck is easy to stop since it sits right along Somis Road. Grab tacos laden with carne asada, carnitas, chorizo, birria, or al pastor. Go for the traditional cilantro and onion with a squirt of lime, or add other toppings like cheese, cucumbers, and more.

The Somis Nut House is also a big draw; you can purchase a large assortment of nuts, dried fruits, and other snacks packed into gourmet gift boxes. You can find specially crafted candies, too, like honeycomb sponges covered in dark chocolate or almond clusters doused in white chocolate. If you're a brittle fan, the shop offers a wide variety. It's open daily for walk-in customers but also allows people to place large orders in advance online or by phone.

If you're looking for a beautiful place to host an event, check out Hartley Botanica. The family-run company has been around for over fifty years, offering a wholesale working nursery and serving as a wedding and event venue. The spot has multiple different gardens, such as the Lotus Tea Garden, which includes paved walkways, a moon door, a walk-through waterfall, and a tearoom. Or you may prefer the Paliuli Gardens, which are intended to be a Hawaiian version of the Garden of Eden.

The area is still largely agricultural. That's celebrated at Underwood Family Farms, which grows many different fruits and vegetables. The farm hosts pick-your-own produce and allows birthday parties to be held there.
